Who hasn’t heard the famous Chanel quote: Before leaving the house, a lady should stop, look in the mirror, and remove one piece of jewelry.€ But how can you tell when you need to do way more than just that?

1. If it adds nothing, leave it off. Does that belt make your waist look tiny? Put it on! Does it cover up the print of your dress or affect the way it hangs? Just say no!

2. Pay attention to proportions: those dangling earrings may be divine, but if they’re so heavy that your earlobes are dragging, they aren’t for you. Same with long, layered necklacesthis trend is still in swing, but if you’re petite or short-waisted, less will be more in this department.

3. Look at the complete picture: sure, that scarf would pair perfectly with your new Jimmy Choos, but if the color against your face makes your pale, it’s probably a good idea to steer clear of that particular outfit topper.

4. Consider the occasional large, statement necklace is probably not ideal for a foray into an under-developed neighborhood in the same way that a knuckle ring isn’t the best choice for a black-tie ball. Always think of where your day will take you and choose your add-on items accordingly.

5. Skip the complete set: Matching your earrings to your necklace to your purse and heels is so retro (and not in a good way.) Once you’ve selected all your accessories for the day or night, carefully look in the mirror and take note of whether they’re too similareach item you put on should add a unique new element to your overall appearance, not just look good with the other items you have on. If an item can’t live up to that task, you really don’t need to be wearing it.
