Packing for the Rockies

When you travel as much as I do, packing becomes something of an art form. Pack too much and you will not only drown in checked baggage and overweight fees, but you’ll also spend forever digging through your bag every time you get dressed.

Here’s my suggested packing list for a week ski trip:

  • Body suits and tights for layering (Pack at least 5; if you spend the day skiing you’ll want to change into a dry/clean bottom layer for apres ski)
  • Yoga pants and jackets (forget the jeans: snow and denim don’t mix well)
  • Hat, mitten, scarfs (think warm and pretty as these are the accessories that will be most visible in your photos.)
  • Long underwear (trust me, you’ll be happy!)
  • Thin athletic socks with moisture wicking material (much better for skiing than thick, wool so-called ski socks)
  • One or two dresses, for a nice evening out
  • Snow boots that are really warm, not just cute
  • Sneakers/athletic shoesfor days that are too cold to ski, expect to enjoy active time indoors, especially if you’re traveling with family
  • Bathing suit/swim wearyou’d be surprised how fun an indoor swim can be when it’s -20c outside
  • Sunscreen and SPF lip balmski slopes are a notorious place to get a sunburn if you aren’t prepared
  • Extra strong moisturizer and night creamthe wind and dry mountain air take a toll on your skin
  • Moisturizing conditioneryour hair will get beat up in the mountains, too
  • Laptop/iPadsome nights, you’ll just want to curl up on the couch with a movie after a day on the slopes. When hotel cable is less than riveting, Netflix can be your insta-solution
  • Camera
  • That book you’ve been dying to read but haven’t had time for
  • Don’t bother packing all that heavy snow gearyou can rent great stuff at the mountain and leave yourself more room for an extra pair of Lulu pants or a bigger stack of magazines.
