Sampling is the Renting of Beauty

Posted By: Christy Bamber

Remember hitting up department store the makeup counters, testing products and getting a mini version to try at home? As make-up specialty stores changed the experience, sampling is now mainly done at store cashiers and you have to use points to snag samples.

Obviously, you can’t rent make-up (who would let you return a used lipstick; and sharing mascara? Just. No.) That’s why makeup counters have special test products that they let you try out, hoping you’ll like them enough to make a purchase.

This idea of try-before-you-buy is the driving force behind beauty sampling services like Birchboxfor a small fee ($10/month for Birchbox) you get a little taste of beauty delivered to your door. Like that new face cream they sent you? Go out and buy more of it. Hate the perfume that came in your box? Toss it out, never wear it again and take solace in the fact that you didn’t waste your hard- earned cash on the full size version.

I’m a big fan of Birchbox because of the variety and high quality of the samples they send you (not all in sample size, either! Those lovely Birchboxers have been known to throw in a full-size Laura Geller blush or Stila eye shadow along with smaller items like hand cream pouches or one-off face masks). Some people complain that the boxes get repetitive in terms of brand of cosmetic and type of beauty product, putting a damper on the sampling fun. If Birchbox isn’t for you, there are plenty of other options out there.
